Reviewing a tournament game

When I took Rick to the Chiracahua Mountains, somewhere halfway along the Heart of Rocks trail where the view of the eroded rock spires is the best, he said "I keep seeing them as chess pieces." A few minutes later he said again, "They just really look like chess pieces."
That's how I've seen the rhyolite tuff spires of the Chiricahuas ever since. Chess pieces.

That look is probably due to his realization that his analysis was completely above my head! Rick was so far beyond me in chess I couldn't even begin to understand his games. Nevertheless, I copied a move from him which I still use to open every game as white. It's an uncommonly used one that lets you castle fast, which Rick said he liked to do.

Rick had an impressive USCF rating of 2142, which meant he had the "Expert" title.
Apart from tournament play, he also liked the fast pace of "double chess," which was just played for fun. He explained this by saying "I like to push plastic."
