One day we went to the Cinderella Mall in Englewood and tried out the concert grands at the Steinway dealership.  The store attendant was super-friendly; at closing time, when he had to go, he said to keep on playing and just to make sure to lock the doors when we left. We played on – it’s not easy to leave a room full of Steinways! -  and then ultimately found ourselves locked inside a completely empty mall.  None of the doors would open to the outside.  We finally managed to escape.

Luckily I managed to grab a couple of quick shots of Rick at one of the 9-footers.  He was totally unaware he was being photographed.  One of his main pieces at the time was Gershwin's Rhapsody.  In fact, in the first photo you can see his right hand way up on the treble side; he might be playing the long scale run at the very beginning of that piece.

I'd never paid much attention to Gershwin's Rhapsody before, but developed a strong appreciation of it after hearing Rick play it several times.
